The smell of warm autumn spices filling the house on a crisp day is pure bliss. It instantly makes the entire kitchen feel comfy and cozy. While it is easy to grab a pre-made tin of pumpkin spice from the grocery store aisle, making your own blend at home is incredibly quick and easy and tastes significantly fresher and brighter than anything that has been sitting on a store shelf for months.

I will be sharing several fall baking recipes soon that call for pumpkin pie spice, so whipping up a batch of this staple now is the perfect way to get your kitchen ready!

🌿 Ingredient Spotlight: The Secret to a Brighter Blend

Standard store-bought pumpkin spice can sometimes taste a bit heavy, flat, or overly sharp from the cloves. To fix that, this homemade blend relies on a special secret ingredient that completely elevates the flavor profile:

🪵 Ground Cinnamon & Nutmeg: The ultimate nostalgic foundation of autumn baking, delivering that classic sweet, woody warmth we all love.

🫚 Ground Ginger: Adds a sharp, zesty, and slightly peppery kick that cuts through the dense sweetness of pumpkin puree.

🫙 Ground Allspice & Cloves: Earthy and deeply aromatic, these intense spices provide that traditional, rich "baked pie" depth.

✨ The Secret Ingredient (Ground Cardamom): Cardamom might seem like an unexpected or "weird" addition to a classic pumpkin spice blend, but it is the ultimate game-changer for this recipe! It brings a unique, complex flavor profile that is citrusy, herbal, and slightly minty, with a warm, peppery undertone. You just need a small amount to add incredible depth, giving your baked goods that irresistible "what is that amazing flavor?” bakery quality

If you don’t have cardamom, the spice blend will still be delicious!

Here's the recipe ~ I hope you love it 🩷

🩷 Sue's Kitchen Tips:

  • 🍯 Batch Baking Tip: This recipe makes a little over 5 tablespoons. If you plan to use this for multiple recipes throughout the season (like my pumpkin cookies, bread, or muffins!), I highly recommend doubling or even tripling the recipe so it’s ready to go when inspiration strikes.

  • 🫙 Storage Favorites: When I do homemade dry mixes or spice blends (like taco seasoning or homemade ranch mix), I love to use a small Ball jar. They keep everything perfectly airtight and look beautiful lined up in the pantry! (You can check out the exact jars and kitchen tools I use on my Shop My Favorites Page!)

🐾 Tango's Kitchen Tips:

I love hanging out on the rug while the warm baking smells fill the house, but spices are strictly off-limits for pups! 🐕 Strong spices like nutmeg and cloves aren't safe for dog tummies, so I’ll stay safely clear of the spice jars. If you want to make your four-legged helper happy while you mix this up, stick to a tiny lick of plain canned pumpkin puree instead! 🎃

I can't wait to share some of my favorite cozy autumn recipes with you over the next few weeks, so keep this little jar handy on your counter! If you mix up a batch, scroll down to the comments and let me know if you love that touch of cardamom as much as I do.

Enjoy,

~ Sue & Tango 🩷 🐾
